A portable shrine housing a deity of the Katori Shrine is carried in Katori, Chiba Prefecture–under guard of about 3,000 parishioners wearing costumes of the Heian period (794-1192)–on Tuesday, the first day of the two-day Shikinen-jinko-sai festival. The festival, which is held every 12 years, portrays the myth of the deity who brought peace to the area.
